This effort advocates for the appreciation and cultural re-integration of peatlands globally. Images have been gathered since spring 2008. Select images from this effort will be applied to various mediums for the exhibition 'Peatland'.
The inaccessibility of bog wetland has kept
these landscapes from the public eye. This exhibit will bring experience of the alien character of these threatened
bio-regions of rich biodiversity to the public consciousness. The land’s aesthetic beauty and ecological importance will be
represented in this collection by 30+ international, multidisciplinary artist’s works.
The significance of peatlands is many fold;
Rare and endangered species thrive within. Their differentiated bio-regions add greatly to the biodiversity
of our planet and add to our biosphere’s resilience as a whole.
Peatlands are significant carbon sinks. A recent U.N. report estimates that preservation and restoration of
peatlands can reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 10%.
Culturally valued for their beauty and their unique biological resources of flora, fauna, and peat, peatlands are considered sacred and mystical places by traditional cultures globally. Experience of these
lands help peoples find accord and relationship to their local ecologies.
Eco, Environmental, Earth, Ephemeral, and Land Art are art genres that are part of
a larger global movement. One that speaks of ecology. "My remit is to work with nature as a whole." Andy Goldsworthy
